DARES is an informal network of influencers and advocates working together to advance effective COVID relief and recovery legislation by providing information about the effects of the crisis and analysis of effective solutions, and by encouraging and facilitating direct lawmaker advocacy.

Our 2021 efforts will focus on advancing President Biden’s priorities for COVID-19 Relief and Recovery legislation.

While we encourage participants to reach out to lawmakers at all levels of government, in 2021, the DARES work will primarily focus on 30 Senators – 15 from each party – whom we believe can be encouraged to act quickly and decisively and at the scale this crisis requires.  These lawmakers – members of the Reluctant Center – must be persuaded that bold action is the only appropriate response to a crisis of this magnitude.

Congress must act at the scale this moment of crisis requires, beginning with the passage of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion Relief Package.

DARES will encourage lawmakers of both parties to do the right thing for the country and embrace and advance President Biden’s vision for bridging our nation through this crisis and laying the groundwork for a stronger, more prosperous nation on the other side.

With new leadership in Washington, our nation has a real fighting chance to address the enormous crisis we currently face and to pave the way for a strong recovery and a just and prosperous future.  If we fail to act decisively during this moment, the suffering and anger will continue to grow until the divisions we currently suffer become irreconcilable.

In President Biden’s words, “We’re in the middle of the once in several generations economic crisis with a once in several generations public health crisis. The crisis of deep human suffering is in plain sight and there’s no time to waste. We have to act and we have to act now.”

DARES seeks to make the Biden/Harris Administration Relief and Recovery vision a reality.

In March, 2020 as the coronavirus began its deadly march across the country, the Patriotic Millionaires launched DARES to provide a forum for like-minded influencers, experts and advocates a regular forum through which to exchange information and share ideas about how to address the myriad problems created by the pandemic.

Working in partnership with multiple donor collaborative organizations, leading advocates, and individual philanthropists and influencers, in 2020, the DARES coalition hosted 31 “Confronting the Crisis” calls with top lawmakers and policy experts including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Jeff Merkley, Rep. Katie Porter, Rep. Jamie Raskin, economist Gabriel Zucman, Special Counsel to the AFL Damon Silvers, Brennan Center President Michael Waldman, Dr. Robert Johnson, Dr. Bill Lazonick, Naomi Klein, and Dr. Stephanie Kelton.

The Confronting the Crisis call series provided this network of influencers critical information about the pandemic, its effects on the economy and the lives of regular people, and the ways that lawmakers could effectively address the multiple challenges facing the country.

In 2021, the DARES program will focus on encouraging and facilitating effective advocacy around President Biden’s priorities for COVID-19 Relief and Recovery legislation.

The only way out is through.

The Organizers

The Patriotic Millionaires is a group of high net worth Americans who share a profound concern about the destabilizing concentration of power and wealth in America. The mission of the group is to build a more prosperous, stable, and inclusive nation by promoting public policies based on the “first principles” of equal political representation, a livable minimum wage, and a fair tax system that demands a greater contribution from wealthy Americans and corporations.

Women Donors Network Action (WDN Action) is a national network of women philanthropists united by shared values. We mobilize our resources – economic, social, and political – to fuel the progressive wins of our time. Together, we invest in advocacy and electoral strategies that center the leadership, vision, and long-term organizing of women, people of color, young people, and underrepresented communities.

Responsible Wealth, a project of the non-profit United for a Fair Economy, is a national network of business leaders, investors and inheritors in the top 5% of the economy who use their surprising voice to speak out – in Congress, in statehouses, in the media and in corporate boardrooms – for progressive taxes, living wages and corporate accountability.

Way To Win is a resource and strategy hub founded in 2017 by a group of donors and organizers seeking a new approach to progressive political funding that wins elections, advances transformative policy, and builds lasting power. The Way to Win strategy supports candidates who reflect the values and demographics of their communities and the independent political organizations who work to elect and hold them accountable to improving lives.

We invite all like-minded individuals and networks to participate in the DARES project.
